About

Intelligent Systems is an internal Nintendo development team created by Gunpei Yokoi. They are the masterminds behind the WarioWare, Fire Emblem, Paper Mario, and Advance Wars series.

Intelligent Systems Co. , Ltd. was founded on February 18, 1984 (and then later founded in North America on October 18, 1985). The company is based in Kyoto, Japan, and is a first-party developer of Nintendo. Intelligent Systems was founded when members of Nintendo Research & Development 1 (including famed Game Boy creator Gunpei Yokoi) created a development team. Gunpei Yokoi had moved to Intelligent Systems after the failure of his Virtual Boy. Intelligent Systems has gone on to develop such famous franchises as Metroid, Paper Mario, Nintendo Wars, WarioWare, Fire Emblem, and Puzzle League. Intelligent Systems has also aided in the development of Nintendo developmental tools and hardware. In late 2013, Intelligent Systems for the first time moved to its own building after being situated inside the Kyoto Research Institute until then.

Intelligent Systems' first game was Famicom Wars for the Nintendo Famicom. Famicom Wars was a strategy game that took war in a much lighter tone than other games. Famicom Wars was the first in Intelligent Systems' Nintendo Wars franchise, many of which Intelligent Systems has developed (Super Famicom Wars, Game Boy Wars, Advance Wars, Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising, Advance Wars: Dual Strike, and Advance Wars: Days of Ruin were all developed by Intelligent Systems). Two years after the release of Famicom Wars, Intelligent Systems released Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryu to HIkari no Ken, the first in the Fire Emblem franchise. The franchise has since had numerous games, all of which have been developed by Intelligent Systems.

Other notable games that have been developed by Intelligent Systems includes many of the WarioWare franchise, Devil World, Wild Gunman, Super Metroid, Panel de Pon (Tetris Attack), Paper Mario, Nintendo Puzzle Collection, Alleyway, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Dr. Mario & Puzzle League, and Planet Puzzle League. Intelligent Systems have also helped with the development of such Nintendo hardware as the Super Game Boy, Super Game Boy 2, and Game Boy Player.
