About

The Learning Company is an American educational software company; publisher of educational games such as Oregon Trail, the Reader Rabbit series, and the Super Solvers series: OutNumbered!, Midnight Rescue!, Treasure Mountain!, Operation Neptune and many others.

History

The Learning Company was founded in 1980 by educators Ann McCormick, Leslie Grimm, Teri Perl. It produced educational games aimed mainly at young children. These games provided a fun way to introduce school age children to math, reading, logic, spelling, typing, science, and other educational concepts.

The Learning Company was founded in 1980 by educators Ann McCormick, Leslie Grimm, and Teri Perl. Part of the original funding for the company came from a National Science Foundation grant. The Learning Company first went public in 1992 and was purchased by SoftKey in 1995 for $606 million. Later, Mattel purchased The Learning Company in 1999 for $3. 8 billion, renaming it to Mattel Interactive. Seeing this as a poor business decision, Mattel eventually sold TLC to Gores Technology Group for $27. 3 million. Currently The Learning Co. is now a subsidiary of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, a U. S. based educational publisher.
